A Begining

I’m not a writer. As you will soon learn. But here I am, fingers pecking away at a keyboard trying to think of something interesting to say. It’s currently 2:41 AM on September 6th 2022. I have been working on my website for several hours and kind of lost track of time. So I figured as long as I was up I might as well write my first blog post. So what have I been up to you ask? Well my wife and I went on a great trip last weekend for our anniversary. I had a wonderful time hanging with my hunny in northern California. Patricks Point, Avenue of the Giants, Eel River. Beautiful country and home to some of the largest living things on earth. If you’ve never seen the giant redwoods in California I would highly recommend it if you get the chance. There’s something magical about walking through a grove of 15’ wide 250’ tall trees. The high thick canopies allowing just enough light through for the ferns and clover that cover the forest floor. It really is beautiful.

But eventually we had to eat, so we headed back to civilization. Aside from getting some much need sustenance, we found several interesting shops and galleries. One stop we made was at the Ferndale Blacksmith Shop. The studio was full of interesting and beautiful art and furniture. All hand made by skilled craftsmen. I took many pictures and got much inspiration from the items on display. It’s been awhile since I’ve fired up my forge. As soon as the temperatures here drop to a reasonable level the forge will once again come to life. I’m very much looking forward to it.

We also visited Blue Ox Millworks and Historic Village in Eureka. This place is a must see. Even my wife, who doesn’t do any woodworking or blacksmithing or anything of the sort, found Blue Ox interesting. You can walk through an old time logging camp, tour the working willwork shop, see the smithy and ceramics studio in use and inspect the various projects that are under construction. I loved seeing the old power tools they have and still use. The phrase “they just don’t make ‘em like that anymore” was never more appropriate. Thanks to my in-laws for telling us about Blue Ox Millworks.

So it was a great weekend for my me and my wife. One of our better ones in quite awhile.
